Where is the Ödemiş to Bozdağ route?

Ödemiş is a town in the Küçük Menderes valley, inland from İzmir, Turkey's third-largest city. Bozdağ is the mountain range above the valley, with a ski resort high up in the pine forest.

If you're staying in İzmir or travelling the Aegean coast, this is the mountain road to add to your trip. Ride inland to Ödemiş, climb to Bozdağ and enjoy the cooler air before heading back to the coast. For a longer Turkish riding trip, it pairs with the Kaş to Kalkan coast road further south.

What's the road like?

This road is all about hairpins. Around 55 corners in 25 km is one of the highest densities in the GOEZ catalogue, and many of them are tight switchbacks that fold back on themselves as the road gains height.

That's why it's rated hard. Hairpins ask for slow entry, the right gear and patience — especially uphill. The pine forest gives shade and great views back over the valley, but it also drops needles and debris on the road. Take the first few hairpins slowly to read the surface.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal: the valley is warm but not hot, and the mountain is clear of snow. Summer works too, and the climb is a welcome escape from the Aegean heat — start early to avoid the hottest part of the day.

In winter, Bozdağ is a ski area. Expect snow and ice up high and check road conditions before you go.

Ride safe

  • Brake before the hairpin, not in it — and pick a lower gear than you think you need.
  • Watch for pine needles, gravel and fallen debris on the inside of tight corners.
  • Expect slow vehicles and farm traffic on the lower sections near the villages.
  • Fill up in Ödemiş; fuel is harder to find once you're on the mountain.
